AUTOMATIC TABLE OF CONTENT

Once you are done inserting page numbers in your document, if not follow the link https://jamila.design.blog/2020/03/02/inserting-different-page-numbering-format-on-a-document/

you can now go ahead and create the table of content.

Before inserting an automatic table of content you need to label all of your chapter titles and headings (e.g. Dedication, Acknowledgements abstract, chaper1, chapter2 and so on) in the style Heading 1.  All major headings within your chapters should be labeled Heading 2.  All subheadings should be labeled Heading 3, and so on.

Below are the steps of creating automatic table of content

STEP 1

Create a new page on your document by going to the insert tab then blank page

STEP 2

Go to the reference tab, then table of content

Drop down the table of content tab and choose Automatic Table 1.

A table of content will be generated like this

STEP 3

On this step go ahead and label all your heading 1 and heading 2. Highlight Chapter 1 and on the ribbon select Heading 1.

All subheadings under chapter one select Heading 2. Repeat the same process to the heading on chapters and subheadings to all the chapter of your project.

When done to label the headings go back to the automatic table of content and update table.

A dialog box will appear then check on the update entire table and click OK.

You can use the same technique when creating list of figures and list of tables.
